See the Railway Differently

I believe railway photography is about far more than recording trains. It’s about discovering the extraordinary in everyday railways through light, landscape, atmosphere and creative composition.

Every railway line, station, bridge and cutting presents a creative photography challenge. The question that inspires every photograph I make is simple:

How can I see this railway differently?

That’s the philosophy behind my photography, my YouTube channel and this website. My aim is not only to create inspiring railway photography, but to encourage others to look beyond the obvious and discover the endless creative possibilities that exist wherever the railway meets the landscape.

A Lifelong Passion for Railways

My fascination with railways began long before I can remember, thanks to my dad’s lifelong love of trains. Growing up immersed in the world of British Rail during the 1970s and early 1980s, I became an enthusiastic trainspotter, and railways have remained a constant throughout my life.

Years later, railway photography rekindled that childhood passion. It combined my love of railways with a desire to create photographs that tell stories rather than simply record trains. What began as a hobby has become a lifelong creative journey.

Railway Photography Beyond the Train

For me, the most memorable railway photography isn’t always about the locomotive itself. It’s about the relationship between the train and its surroundings.

Light, weather, landscape, reflections, mist, dramatic skies and changing seasons all become part of the photograph. Sometimes the train dominates the scene; other times it becomes a small but important element within a much larger landscape.
I’m particularly drawn to the creative challenges of dawn, dusk and night photography, when atmosphere and light can transform familiar railway locations into something completely different.

Rather than asking, “Where can I photograph this train?”, I prefer to ask, “How can I photograph this railway in a way I haven’t seen before?”

Learning Through Creativity

I’m proud to be a member of the 1Z10 Railway Photography Group and Chairman of the Phoenix Railway Photographic Circle.
Both organisations share a belief that creative railway photography is about observation, imagination and continual learning. Being surrounded by talented railway photographers who challenge conventional thinking continues to inspire me to develop my own railway photography and encourage others to do the same.

Sharing the Journey

Photography naturally led me into filmmaking, and I now share my railway photography adventures on YouTube.
My videos aren’t simply about photographing trains—they explore the creative process behind the images. From scouting locations and working with changing weather to experimenting with composition, light and storytelling, I hope they inspire photographers of every ability to develop their own creative vision.

My Hope

If there’s one thing I’d like visitors to take away from this website, it’s this:

Railway photography has no limits.

Whether you’re photographing a main line express, a quiet branch line, an industrial siding or station, every location offers an opportunity to create something unique.
If my photographs or videos encourage you to pause, look a little longer, experiment with composition, or simply see a familiar railway in a new way, then I’ve achieved exactly what I set out to do.

Thank you for visiting.
I hope my work inspires you to pick up your camera…
…and see the railway differently.
