I love railway photography because it brings together so many things that inspire me: the railway, the landscape, our towns and cities, changing seasons, dramatic weather, beautiful light and the endless possibilities of photography.
Creative Railway Photography
As a UK railway photographer, I’m passionate about exploring these possibilities and creating railway photographs that go beyond simply recording trains. For me, railway photography is about looking beyond the obvious, finding interesting perspectives and discovering the extraordinary in everyday places. I’m fascinated by the relationship between a train and its environment, whether that’s the drama of a train emerging from the shadows, the atmosphere of a misty morning, the colours of a spectacular sunset or the movement and energy of a train travelling through the landscape.
I enjoy photographing railways in all their settings, from the stunning open landscapes of the British countryside to the often overlooked urban and industrial environments of our towns and cities. There’s a particular challenge in finding creative compositions amongst the buildings, infrastructure and sometimes less attractive corners of the urban railway. Yet these places have their own character, stories and atmosphere. Weathered buildings, ageing infrastructure, industrial remnants and the beauty of decay and neglect can provide just as much inspiration as the most spectacular countryside location. Sometimes the most interesting photographs are found in the most unexpected places.
Learn, Explore and Be Inspired
Creative railway photography is at the heart of everything I do. I enjoy exploring different techniques and continually challenging myself to see familiar locations in new ways. From atmospheric low-light photography and long exposures to reflections, silhouettes, motion and carefully considered compositions, I enjoy experimenting with the possibilities that photography offers. Sometimes it’s about patience, sometimes imagination, and occasionally just being in the right place at the right time.
I believe the most rewarding railway photographs are those that make you stop and look, perhaps seeing something familiar in a completely new light. My aim is to create images that capture a sense of place, atmosphere and emotion, telling a story about the railway rather than simply recording the train. Whether it’s an artistic interpretation of a passing train, an atmospheric railway landscape or an unexpected urban composition, I’m always looking for opportunities to create something distinctive.
I’m also a firm believer in the value of sharing our passion for railway photography with others. I’m actively involved with 1Z10, a group of like-minded railway photographers who enjoy exploring Britain’s railways together, sharing ideas and experiences, and encouraging each other to develop our photography. I’m also proud to serve as Chairman of the Phoenix Railway Photographic Circle, an organisation with a long tradition of photographic excellence. It’s a responsibility I particularly enjoy, helping to shape its future, encourage creativity and bring photographers together through a shared enthusiasm for the art of railway photography.
